An Opel GT. Or A P1800ES. I’ve been shopping these two for months just wishing that I had money and more space for one or both.
How do they manage to constantly mess up this website? It’s like they have focus groups targeting what would make things worse.

I’ve wanted a Porsche for a while, but they quit getting cheaper so I’m waiting for the next economic downturn or financial disaster to motivate sellers and reduce prices.
I alternate between a Cayman S and a 997 (or newer) 911.

I want to a small truck like a ranger or tacoma. Something 4x4 to replace trying to take the Subaru down logging roads. Then either drop the Subaru back down to stockish ride height or get something RWD that’s not a convertible .

I’m picking up the 02 today and cannot wait to see how nicely it drives (as I already thought it was running well). I’m a lso excited to hear how it sounds with the new exhaust. Italian pipes on a built Bavarian.
Other things:
Oppo has really turned me on to a GLK 350 as a dad car. All of my buddies will be cracking jokes at me because it’s a soccer mom car and I have been down on Mercedes for 95% of my automotive career. However, I’m pretty sure that is what it’s going to be, pending a test drive.

I’m not sure yet... Got my taxes back from the accountant last night and we are getting a nice refund. My wife has already said we should save it and put it towards a new car to replace my Cruze. Winning.
Now I don’t even know what I want. I was really close to pulling the trigger on a BMW 328i a few months ago, but then I learned about their timing chain gear issues and this car fell within the build dates that definitely have that problem. I always thought BMWs were reliable but that doesn’t seem to be the case as of late. So I’m gonna keep searching.

A friend of mine had an E36 325i back in the early 2000's that always seemed pretty reliable... That’s about my only real BMW experience though.
My wishlist is RWD, manual, decent amount of cargo room, decent gas mileage, and pretty reliable since it will be my new daily. I haven’t hammered out a final budget yet but probably around 30k-ish. There’s definitely some trade space in there. For example, I think my dream is a CTS-V wagon. It’s got everything I want and I’d suffer the poor fuel economy just because it’s freaking awesome. But I think it’s also out of my budget. A newish 328 or 335 would tick the boxes except for reliability. I’ve also been reconsidering an FRS/BRZ but I wish it was a bit bigger.
![]() 03/27/2019 at 11:35 |

Obviously.
Yea, honestly the depreciation is what put me over the edge. I mean I like the look of it but when I saw I could get one with barely any miles on it for 20 grand or less I thought, “yep”.
![]() 03/27/2019 at 11:41 |

Not saying they can’t be, but they don’t compare with a Japanese car.
That said, b uy a 100k mile 2009 E90 M3 for less than $20k, pay $2500 for new rod bearings for peace of mind , make sure other maintenance is up to date, put a couple grand aside for future repairs, and enjoy! =) Awesome car (ask me how I know), and near the bottom of its depreciation curve.

I’ve looked at both. The reasons I haven’t pulled the trigger are that I currently live in an apartment and can really only easily have/store one vehicle. In the past I was heavily involved in autox and my BRZ is all set up to be competitive in the STX class where all my friends are, so I have a hard time getting rid of the BRZ (plus I really like it).
I’m doing less autox, but a ton of track (I’m on track for over 30 track days this year). The higher running costs and repair costs for a Porsche are a little scary. If I could find a manual, good shape 987 for around $25k or a 981 in good condition for $35k (no black cars) I would be very tempted. Same with a 997 for under $35k.
What’s probably going to happen is, I’ll buy a house and have garage space but no money since I bought a house. It’d be nice if I just fell into a few thousand dollars so that I could buy all the things. I became an official Porsche Club of American (PCA) Instructor and those events really make me jealous.

Hnnng! I loved those cars when they came out. I am a sucker for high strung NA motors. And I did actually briefly look at M3s but they were out of my budget, though they may have been F80s.
Hmm, there’s a 2011 with 56k at a Carmax very close by that they want $27k for. It’s a coupe, I think I’d actually prefer a sedan, but yeah, apparently an E90 could be in my budget. This is very interesting to me now. I at least need to go test drive one.
Also, any thoughts on manual vs DCT? I know I said manual was a requirement, but I would consider a proper DCT - I just don’t want a traditional torque converter auto (or worse, a CVT) with fake flappy paddles. My wife doesn’t drive stick, though I’ve been trying to teach her, but I could easily sell her on a DCT.

Your wife can blame me for putting this idea in your head. Ha!
Test drives are dangerous things...
I haven’t driven the DCT, but clearly it’s very good, and fast, and seems pretty reliable as well. I just enjoy driving a manual enough, and know that I’d probably just end up driving a DCT in auto mode all the time. Also, long-term, manual will hold its value better. The DCT is definitely a legit choice, though, especially if your wife can’t drive a manual.
The pricing graphs and knowledgeable comments on BaT might be helpful to you.

I bought my ‘08 E90 in 2012, with just under 40k miles and some remaining factory warranty. Thankfully caught the AC evaporator for the time was up. I’ve got over 120k on her now, and she’s no longer my daily driver. Still on original clutch, rod bearings and throttle actuators (another common failure). I’ve had a few issues with some sensors, and burned up a fuel pump (my mistake for running it out of gas once - ugh...). It’s not a cheap car to run, by any means, but it’s terribly rewarding. Have taken it to the track many times, and it gets regular backroad workouts (not as often as I’d like with family commitments) . No regrets.
An “end of an era” car, for sure.

Wow, that’s a lot of info. Thanks! Good to know about the potential problems. The rod bearing thing scares me a bit, but otherwise nothing you mentioned really turns me off. I’ll have to run some numbers because I try to look at total operating cost as well, so I need to think about fuel, insurance, etc. But this is starting to sound like a contender.
I think I’d want a stick as well, but I could definitely live with a DCT. There aren’t a whole ton of these cars out there, so I don’t think I’ll be able to be super choosy, but we’ll see what happens. I am up for a promotion in June (a more or less automatic thing when my probationary period ends), so I’m trying to hold off until then to buy, but I’d jump on the right deal if it comes up.
I’m also thinking about a few other cars. An STI may be on my list, it’s in the same price ballpark as the E90 M3 . I had an 04 WRX back when I was in the Navy and its one of my favorite cars I’ve ever had. I really wanted an STI at the time but couldn’t afford it, so now could be my chance, though I also feel like maybe that’s just nostalgia talking, but I might test drive one at least.
There was something else this morning that now I can’t remember...

I’ve done 6 trackdays and 3 autox events so far this year, I’ve got a couple of weekends without events coming up but I might get bored and show up at an event (Eagle’s Canyon Raceway was supposed to reopen by now but they’ve had terrible luck with weather this year and are behind schedule). I’m seriously considering becoming a member there which would mean that I wouldn’t have to do as much instructing but could still get lots of track time for a reasonable price.
In my BRZ a trackday costs just under $200 (Instructing means I don’t pay entry fees but consumables still aren’t free).
$60 for gas, $60 for tires, $2 0 for brakes, and another $10 for fluids puts the consumables cost at about $150 (I’m actually getting longer out of my brakes and tires than I budgeted so my running costs for the first 6 days this year have actually been a little less). Last year’s final tally came out to almost exactly $200 per trackday but I paid for more events since I wasn’t an instructor with all the clubs yet.

I’ve never been to Eagle’s Canyon - it’s definitely on the list once it’s done. Making it to Hallett this year? Have you been following this new one that’s coming ? https://lgmotorsportspark.com/facilities/
The low running costs of the 86s and Miatas are definitely a good selling point!

![]() 03/27/2019 at 13:19 |

I will, for sure. And I usually don’t get too caught up too early. My wife on the other hand...
We test drove 4 cars, 2 of them twice, before we got her Terrain back in the fall - a CX-5, a Terrain, a Forester XT, a CR-V, a Terrain (again), and a CX-5 (again) . Everytime we left a dealership, she would say some variation of “Well that was clearly the best one, I don’t understand why we didn’t just buy it! ?”
Anyways, I’m working on my list now, and I’ll start seeing what’s out there and try to do some test drives... Carmax is usually good for that, so I’ll try to hit them up. I will report back with my findings on Oppo.

I’ve been formally invited to attend Miatas at Hallett this year, but I need to get my class schedule before I make a decision (one downside to teaching). Lou has ambitious plans for his track , it will be way out of my price range and he doesn’t want to host public events there if he can help it.
ECR is tons of fun and their plans are amazing, when they reopen they’ll be the best track in the area and once they’re done with construction they might be the best track in Texas (their plan is to be better than COTA)!
I picked my BRZ with running costs in mind, I knew that I wanted to maximize my fun and that I was working with a limited budget. That’s a big reason why I’ve stuck with my BRZ and have held off on a Porsche. They probably wouldn’t cost much more to run but I wouldn’t push nearly as hard in a more expensive car with more expensive repairs for off track excursions or other mishaps.
![]() 03/27/2019 at 13:43 |
|
Doesn’t want to host public events? Whaaat? So like a Monticello Motor Club model? That sucks.
That’s great to hear about ECR. Closer to me than Cresson.
![]() 03/27/2019 at 13:53 |
|
Yep, they want to be elite with elite pricing. I give it 2 years before they either open it up to public events or go under. I’m not a Lou fan to begin with and I have no support to offer for exclusive motor clubs. The track should be a place where skill and the clock are the only things that people are ranked by.
Now, if I played and won the lotto I might change my views on all the non-member riffraff taking up track space.
![]() 03/27/2019 at 14:05 |
|
They’ll see quickly that they need all the people they can get on track to make it work. I definitely agree with you - the best thing about going to the track is seeing the camaraderie between people of such varied class and background, brought together by a shared love.
LOL!

Saw that, haven’t watched the vid yet, need to check it out! I read the backstory though, glad it’s back on the road but too bad it sat neglected for so long. Hopefully it gets properly used now, if it’s structurally sound it’d be a really cool car for road rallies.

The list is long, but some useful changes are coming soon. I worked a tradeout deal (work for parts) for a set of wider Fuchs, and sold off some other stuff to raise money for a Wevo shifter and tires. Scored a bigger rear swaybar for $40 on Craigslist too. My first little rally is coming up next month!

Yep, cancer is where I draw the line with patina. Light s urface rust (closely watched ) , crummy paint, dents, scratches, great. Just run it, and run it hard. But if it’s got holes in it, especially structurally, that doesn’t fly . The only reason my car got repainted almost 20 years ago is because it had a little bloom of rust around the rear window, so they took it down to metal. My Lancia is solid but the paint is dull, several shades of white and with primer showing, with bits of surface rust that I’ve been working to mitigate , but I’m not going to touch it until I can afford a full color change, which will probably be never. Beyond that, t he patina thing has gone overboard. There’s a point, you know?
